Could be any of the bichirs actually. Most stores just come up with a common name rather than research the species themselves but most of the time, they are either Polypterus ornatipinnis or P. senegalus.

True, but so far petmsmart only keeps polypterus senegalus in stock. I'm willing to bet that will change in time.

Senegals are fun.. I find that they are the most active swimmers.. and so darn cute!

update: one of the 2 is doing awsome, the other one has yet to eat. i dont think he recognizes any of the food ive introduced to be food. the other has doubled in body size and added about 1/4" length. water params are excellant. ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate between 0 and 20 ppm. my ph is high but so is the store where i got them. maybe i just got a gimp, and maybe he will finally decide to eat and grow like a weed.
