It makes them less toxic but it doesn't remove them from the water.
Ammonia is converted to nitrIte by bacteria in your filter.
NitrIte is converted to nitrAte by bacteria in your filter.
You then have to remove the nitrate with water changes.
Just because the nitrate is made less toxic by Prime doesn't mean you don't have to keep the levels down in order to maintain the health of your fish.
Unfortunately there's no better alternative to frequent water changes.
