Separating and re-introducing males and females

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine constantly ram the divider trying to get to each. The male once tilted it and fit under and got to her side during the night. The next morning he was on top of her, and she had fresh bites all over her disc and top of her. I'm pretty sure she's already pregnant so I don't want her going through that kind of stress right now. If I knew he would settle down after a few day I would leave them. But if he kept up the abuse at the same rate I don't think there would be much left of her after a few week. Once she pops I'll put them back together and see what happens and if he lightens up a bit. I'm adding more females to help distract him and throwing my arowana in there for a further distraction.

Was she beat up at all when you found them? Is she still too young to breed?

Yea the smaller one is definitely too young to breed, the other is 14 inches and I read a post with someone that had a 14 inch female leo that bred, so thats questionable, but I still doubt it. That being said, the smaller female had only one small new bite, nothing big, but the bigger newer female that he has picked on consistently since I got her had 3 small chunks missing out of her disc. Hope they heal nice. Separated again last night, though I can tell the smaller female tried to ram the divider hard because it was crooked as hell this morning. I think she loves him, but he's just gonna cheat on her ;)

HAHA!

The boys get rough when breeding, so some bites and disc damage can be expected. Just monitor it, for the most part the discs regenerate.
