Well, I am now completely obsessed with Piranha and they have taken the place at the top of my list. I have a 3" (Serrasalmus Elongatus) Pike Piranha coming tomorrow and have a 40 gal long set up for him and also have a 2" (Serrasalmus rhombeus) -Peru coming with it, and have a seperate tank set up for him as well. I have been doing alot of research on both, but would like to know if anyone has personal experience keeping Serrasalmus Elongatus, I havent found many threads on this species, but have heard that it is more aggressive than the Black P. Thanks.

never had an elong before so can't really give you any info, but from what I've read that they are pretty active and are high speed ambush predator so if the tank isn't big enough it'll be idea to add a strong power head so they can swim in the current.
Elong can get to about 9" or so (pretty rare) so something a bit wider would be nice other wise may have hard time turning around, personally I'd use 18" wide tank.

good luck and look forward to your pictures.

I am a elong keeper, that's him in my display pic :) they can be quite the finger chaser and very aggressive if u got the right fish! i have seen them in stores just as skitish as red bellys. Mine on the other hand is a little monster who attacks all day. These fish have a elongated body because they like to swim alot wheras most piranha just hover around slowly. My advise would be to get a strong powerheand so he can swimm against the suent all day.

Hope this helps :)

Nice lookin fish, yea I have a powerhead setup and will upgrade him to a 75gall around December. Thanks for the reply :P

A 55 long is more than enough for an elong for life. I have never seen a captive elong bigger than 7" so it will be more than enough.

Elongs like open tanks with lots of current. Make sure you have dead spots as well so it can rest.

Ok, just got my Black Piranha and my Pike Piranha, the Pike Piranha (Serrasalmus Elongatus), is looking and acting perfect, already swimming about. The Black Piranha, came in with some torn fins and a sore on his mouth,(prob due to the plastic shipping container), hopefully he will heal up ok. Here are a few pics, they are pretty shy right now, so they arent the best
