Just picked up a new 55gal at a yardsale today and I was thinking about a Serverum Tank. How many would you suggest in a 55?

You could do a pair of heros sp. rotkeil but IMO a 55 is too small for the Green, Gold and Red Spots heros efasciatus who reportedly can get to 12 inches. Of course many places on the web say that a 55 is minimum for one heros efasciatus.

Use the tank as a sump for a future DIY wet/dry filter on a larger tank......In the mean time, you can breed a pair in a 55g.......You have an y other tanks???Get a trio of Rot's and grow them out..........Save up for another larger tank, preferably a 6 foot 125g...........The basic 6 footer will be perfect for a trio of full grown greens and a pair of rots'.........

Yeah, i still have my 75 gallon JD breeding tank (they are still pumping out babies left and right). The 55 was an impulse buy and at $10 i couldn't pass it up. The LFS has a pretty good selection of turquoise, gold, and whites that are about the size 1.5" right now. I've wanted a Serverum tank for a while and the ultimate goal is a 175gal with 5-6 Serverum and some variety of catfish.
The timeline for the big tank is within 6 months (whenever my company hands out our end of year bonus). You think I would be okay to get the juvies now and grow them out in the 55. I hate to just have an empty tank sitting around.

you could do a pair for about 2 years. my pair got way to large, gold and rotkeil, and the male would beat the crap out of the female when the spawned. mine grew pretty fast in a 55g and were breeding within 6months, about 3-4". as they got larger i took tank mates out. they're now in a 75g with a small group of festivus and fit perfectly in there

If you have solid plans to get a bigger tank soon, then I would go for it. Severums grow pretty slow; my green has only grown 3.5" in about 8 months, and he has outpaced the Rotkeil which has only grown 3" in the same amount of time. You'll have some time to get a bigger tank setup and going.

Severums can get aggressive towards each other even at a small size; the gold and the super red I had in my 180 gallon were fighting badly at less than 3" long. They liplocked and tore scales off of each other for no apparent reason and didn't stop for an entire day. I had to remove the gold severum. In a 55, you won't have enough room to keep more than 2 fish. Overcrowding could result in blood, and that's never fun. If the bigger tank is not a reality, then I would start with no more than a pair.

Having a spare 55 is always a nice thing too; you never know when you might need to pull a fish. I have a spare 55 gallon setup as a hospital/quarantine tank.

The big tank is definately a go. I've already built the stand for it. The 55 looks really tiny sitting on a stand built for a 175.
I guess I hadn't realized how aggressive they were. Do target fish lessen this aggression or is it that they are not tollerant of their own species? Might have to rethink my stock list for this 175.

I have found the aggression to be more conspecific; all three of my severums get along most of the time but have occasional disputes with each other. They sometimes hang out together but mostly keep their distance.

I have my severums in a community tank with Spotted & Thin bar myleus, 4 different plecos, a pair of acara, a flagtail, and a few GBRs. All of my severums get territorial when feeding but are otherwise mostly peaceful to the other fish. The severums and acara flare at each other, but I don't think they have ever actually made contact.
