I would keep it simple. If it didn't come with a drip plate, just use submersible bio-media.
I would plumb it so that your overflows drain into a couple filter socks and place some submersible bio media (Seachem Pond Matrix or ceramic rings) on they way to where your return pump is located and call it a day. All you need it to do is remove particulates (mechanical filtration) and provide surface area for bacteria to grow (Biofiltration) and this will get it done.
