Setting up 125g brackish tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, as stated, I don't have the cash to buy live sand, live rock, and a protein skimmer right now. I can start a brackish tank for much cheaper, and as long as I select only high-salt tolerant fish, eventually, as I save up cash, I can convert it to saltwater.

I haven't decided if this is really what I want to do or not, I was just checking to see what others thought/have tried.

Thanks for the link.

Either way I think you'll be pleased. I say go for it and see where it takes you. I never looked back. :D

+1

i never thought i'd have a marine tank with corals ect. i only went marine cos of my GSP. he jumped out the tank and died a week ago... through a hole the same size as he was... stupid fish. but anyway, i have a tank full of coral, starfish, snails, and marine fish that i never would have if i didnt go brackish.

i think ive learned more progressing through brackish to SW, rather than just going full marine first. brackish is a dark art in my opinion. and you learn more about fish keeping because of it.

it forces you to make decisions every day, as there is probably only 1/10th the info on keeping brackish as there is on keeping marine fish. and i think thats an optimistic estimate. its not always possible to just google something and find an answer.

sometimes you have to use you head, and maybe your balls if you come equiped with them...:)

Cool. I'm definitely willing to put in the effort to learn. Hell, I built my first sump for my 125g tank without ever having seen so much as a pic of another sump, just reading a description, and it turned out to be damn near identical to most of the ones on mfk.

I like a lot of the brackish fish, and I think eventually I'll want to make the tank full marine. It used to be my brothers tank, and he had a full marine setup, so it will be returning to its original use :)

I'll make sure to post my progress and any questions/issues I have on here, since I'm sure someone here will have gone through whatever I might run into.

Thanks!

Here's a closeup of my moray eel. I also have a couple video's of him hunting ghost shrimp I'll be posting once they upload to youtube. Stupid youtube...

My girlfriend thinks its cute, although the "eel" thing does freak her out a little. But that's just because she discovered my 12" tiretrack eel dried up under the stand one day over the summer, about 3 months after it disappeared... She banned me from getting another eel, but that didn't last long :)
