cichlidgirl, I am going to use reg. sand just like the first picture shows but I wanted to get some coral in their to make my PH steady just like you suggested. I also don't want to use any ph buffers because their expensive and hard to keep at the same level. I did get these from the LFS special order.

I would ask what the ph is where you got them and then go with the same in your tank. If they had a ph above 8 then you should do the same but if not it would be much better to keep the ph lower where the fish are used to it. Just my two cents.
