setting up a 120g.. what type of flter and heater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how does the filter work and how do you know if the air pump is big enough?.. maybe i will use them at temporary filters at first.

The principle is the same as a UGF, only you aren't using the gravel. Either a powerhead or air can be used. If there are large bubbles coming out of the end of the air line, the pump is big enough. It is hard to not have a big enough air pump. I don't know why you want to only use them as temp filters, as they are far better IMO than most manufactured filters.

I wish I could get more of the Ebo's. The new eheim heaters are not nearly as good as the old ebos, or even the newer ebos.

that website interesting... btw it said i need 311.5 watts for my heater

That will depend on the brand of heater you get. Some have more efficient coils that heat the water Ebo's are great at heating the water efficiently.

Got any facts to support this?

I'm just thinking out loud here. :D

If something that uses electricity is not efficient then the power is lost to heat.
I'm going to guess that a 100w cheap piece of crap heater is going to heat just as efficient as a high end 100w heater. Where does the power go if it's not heating the tank?
The difference in heaters will be reliability and longevity.

I have personal experience. Early on, I ran tetra heaters, and for a standard 55 it took 250W to heat a 55 at a constant 82dF, with the ability to treat for ich only getting up to 86dF. One Ebo jager 75W heater is able to keep a 55 at 84dF without problem, and can range up to 94dF. I have also used many other heaters with varying abilities. If you compare the rated aquarium sizes for the two major brands of heaters, you will see a huge difference directly from the manufacturers. From the Eheim site, a 100W heater can heat 100 gallons of water, from the Marineland website, a 100W Visi-therm stealth heater can heat 30 gallons of water. Of course the numbers there aren't nearly what I would follow, they do show what the range can be. I have used both, and like both, but when using eheim/ebo jagers, I will run 1.5W/gallon, for stealths I run 3W/gallon.
