Hey guys, I just got back into the aquarium DISEASE and found myself going for a 220g Predator tank. I am keen on a shark of some sort that SWIMS and doesnt just sit like a cat shark. Also looking to add some puffers, eels, groupers, maybe a rock fish. I am going to start cycling my tank this weekend. I have my eyes set on a Leopard shark..i know i cant keep him in there no longer than about a year. I am open to suggestions and I would like to know if any of you know anyone i can contact to get those type of special order fish. Thanks!

Please do not get one, it would be very irresponsible of you to buy one knowing damn well that you cannot properly keep him once you get him.

If you want a "swimming shark" as you call them get a 1000 gallon tank first then get one.

BTW: My coral cats come out all the time and they only get 2'

arem't leopard sharks the same as zebra sharks?

yeah requiem sharks, the kind that keep swimming, are very expensive and get far, FAR, too large for a 220 for more than a few months. it's really irresponsible to get one in too small of a tank and without knowing how to care for them.
if you do in your lifetime have a big enough tank to house a req shark and decide to keep one they really can't be kept with anything except the largest of groupers and eels.
angels, triggers, and other fish tend to poke at and eat the eyes of sharks and so are also bad choices. keeping large fish isn't only about tank size; but also temperment, compatability, diet, and finding naturally occuring species, that will live together peacefully.

Yeah i dont think you will get any advice about reqium sharks other then dont get one.
The rest of the stuff you mentioned would be ok.

Hey guys, thanks for feedback. Just wanted to say that i dont intend on keeping the shark there for long, just as a grow out. I can easily sell him to a Big Als who can accomodate. Also, VLDESIGN indicated that his coral cats come out..how active are they? i dont mind getting them if they'll be active. The Big Als in whitby has a 700g tank with a 3ft leopard, eels, groupers, rock fish etc. i know if i get him small, i can keep him for a year.

unless you have spoke with big als about buying the shark off you i would not buy it. i have tried to sell many fish to various lfs and they will only buy when they have a tank big enough. a shark like the one you want requires a huge tank, and they might not have the tank space available when the shark outgrows your tank.

I know this is my first post but I too have become interested in a shark. You mentioned you may be interested in a Leopard shark if you are refering to one in the picture at this link, http://z8.invisionfree.com/Sharks_and_Rays/index.php?showtopic=186 , then you should know they are a protected species and can no longer be obtained less than 35" in length. Read around that site for other sharks that can be kept in an aquarium it's a great resource.

and if this is what you're talking about,
phhh..... they get 14 ft

They come out all the time when the lights are dim. As for regular activity I'd say three days out of the week I usually see them swimming around. Two of those days are usually my indication that they want food. The other random day is usually just them poking around. I have a cave for them that they do both like to stay in for shelter (Im trying to get them to breed) but if you don't give them a place to hide obviously they will most likey be more active.

Of the cat sharks, this is more active in my experience. I'd like to get an Epp, but the 4' length keeps me away as my tanks foot print is only 6'x3'.

Also agree with the other post in that unless you have a prior agreement with them, I would think they won't take it. I know here in Chicago even the Shedd will not take fish as it leads people to think they can just call and dump off their monster fish there.

sharks, sharks, sharks.... What about a medium sized moray? Dragons dont get that big and they look like dinosaurs. If i had the space for a large predatory salt tank i would definetly get a moray.
