Setting up a 220gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will just run LED's. Hopefully I will not need a chiller. Did you paint or wrap the back of your tank? I was thinking of going black back there for a nice clean look.

You can use a tiny amount of sand from the old aquarium as-is in the new one in order to help seed the dead aragonite sand and start the cycle; by the way, when I say tiny, I mean maybe a cup or two.

You shouldn't need a chiller unless you run MH lighting; T5's and LEDs have a negligible amount of heat transferred to the aquarium itself. If you have no intention of adding corals any time soon, then you don't need to go all-out for your lighting. However, everything will look way better if you make sure that you have both standard high intensity daylight bulbs/LEDs and actinic bulbs/LEDs; the colors will really pop with the addition of the actinic lighting.

Painting the back black or blue will look pretty nice, so I say go for it. If you want a less-than-permanent solution, then get a nice plain background that can be attached to the back.

Definitely go black. My wife won't let me do black, she is pissed as it is this thing is consuming her kitchen....so I will be going blue lol

I may do a soft coral(anemone) in the future for my percula's. But other than that, fish only for me. You reef guys work way too hard. lol
Thank you

Ha! You're wife's pissed?? I just told my wife I'm gonna have to support the floor better for our new house!! And I just rehabbed half of it!:screwy: Oh well, sooner or later she'll be ok with it.

Long as it does not look like a science fair she will be happy. If it looks like a science fair and it's in a section of the house everyone sees, you will never hear the end of it....lol

I agree 100% As much as I want this tank up, I'm taking my time and planning things thru as much as I can. Believe me, I want a nice clean look in my house with this tank.

Bringing this thread back from the dead...lol
It's taking longer than expected due to floor support I added and other odds and ends etc
My tank will be here in 3 weeks(220gal) Now I need to start getting all my goodies together. What heaters & power heads do you recommend ? Thank you for your help.
