An island somewhere......
I've been keeping my Red Head Tapajos in a community of Eartheaters and other misc. fish in a 270g. tank. They spawn regularly but all the eggs are devoured withing a day. I can say with absolute certainty that there are 3 pairs, I've actually have moved a pair out a couple time when I noticed spawning activity and have successfully raised the fry with the parents in a 40g.

I'm at the point where I'd like to set up some breeder tanks strictly for each pair and let them rear their own fry. I'm kicking around either 40g. or 60g. tanks. I'd like to do a rack system or put them back to back to back since space is an issue. I know they can be prolific in a 40g. but I'd like to give them the room of a 48" (60g.) footprint. What do you guys think? 36" footprint verses 48" footprint? I'd prefer larger but space in my garage is limited. Thoughts?

They are already paired, and your planning on one pair per tank, there is absolutely no need for 48"
I would get four 40 gal breeders(Drilled on the back) and build a rack. The top tank overflows into the tank below, that tank overflows into the one below etc... The bottom tank is your sump, which pumps back up to the top tank

That's a good idea

I thought about it some more and stacking four 40b's vertical ends up being too tall, so I drew this up for you. You would still plumb them all in line as if it was a vertical stack, but this way everything is within reach, and you don't need as big of a pump due to the head height. I had two different ideas for plumbing, one way it would all be on the back, the other way it would run through the center of the stand between the tanks. Let me know what you think

Shellies, that is an impressive graphics diagram. I don't have 6' plus of space but was taking your idea in consideration for back to back, double high so the foot print may be 40"x36". I'd obviously have to walk around to see the back tanks. BUT.... I'm glad you brought it up because then I only need one/two heaters, one return pump, some sponge to cover the drains.....

Thanks for putting all the time and effort into my thread.

i would sell everything in the 270s and devote one tank for each pair. that way it'll be epic

You are obviously not playing with a full deck of cards! :screwy:

Where would my Platy and Swordtail colonies go?

You can probably get away with 40g breeders for individual pairs. Filtration may be tricky though - considering there will be small fry and fry food like BBS, you may need to be able to turn off the filtration in individual tanks temporarily when feeding. It would be hard to do if all the tanks are connected into one system.
