Setting up a hap/peacock tank

I have plastic holey rock, I have been holding 110 gallons at 7.70 pH with 1 quart of 1/2" sea shells in a high flow area, and 12 egg shells. I had them laying around and thought I would see if they would work.

Flagstone of slate will not buffer. At pH=7.7 no worries about buffering anyway. Better to stay stable with your tap water as long as it's not too low. What is your KH?

I don't have a KH test. I have the API master test kit, and that just does ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH. Does API make a similar, stand-along KH test?

If the water is hard enough, would I be able to avoid cichlid salts? I read about using a mixture of baking soda, I think epsom salt, and... regular salt(?) if memory serves. Thinking that'll be cheaper than getting an official "cichlid salt", but if I can avoid that altogether, even better!

API does make a KH and GH test. With pH 7.7 as long as your KH is >= 7 then you should be able to avoid additives. Check the tap AND the tank.
