My mom loves puffers and always looks for them when she would drive me to fish places, she wants a few in a little tank now. My LFS has spotted and figure 8s for 8$ ea, and I figure 3 in a 30 ga would be good right? I once had a little pea puffer tank a long time ago, but would that be a good combo? 2 8s, 1 spotted. They get like 3 in. Long he tells me (owner of LFS). He said gravel, sand whatever is okay, and go with some plants, is one better then the other? I trust this guy, he's never led me wrong before, but I like to double check my info from other exp keepers

I'm not sure if your mom is an experienced fish keeper, but both species can be difficult to keep for beginners. Figure 8s are brackish and GSPs will do best in salt water as adults. If she's up to the task, then I say go for it, but there are a number of dwarf species that may be better suited.

I don't believe they play nice together, usually don't want to mix a bunch in one smaller tank. I believe GSPs get much larger than 3", probably closer to 5-6".

They aren't green spotted puffers but yellow amazon puffers (unless they are the same thing not sure) if that's the case I bet she can handle brackish (she's an accomplished gardener and IMO keeping fish isn't much different, I also have my own garden in the back). I will ask next time I'm there about the dwarf species and if they get any (I know I've seen them there but not in a while). She is smart, and I would admit if she wasn't lol. Her boyfriend used to keep a lot of fish when he was younger so me and him are going to be helping her out too, so iincompetence shouldn't be an issue.

If your opinions keep pointing towards an pea puffers then I will go with that, she doesn't care as long as she can interact with them

I'm not sure what yellow amazon puffers are. The only thing that I can think of that would resemble that name are Colomesus Asellus, but they are not spotted.
Figure 8s are great puffers, and if you don't mind going brackish, I say go for it.

If you can get a 40 breeder you should get a congo puffer and keep it as a single wet pet

a congo would be awesome, but she's using one of my old tanks and a 30 is the biggest one I got not in use. to save a bunch of money lol. Ill probably go with just the figure 8s, thanks for the help guys! I'm going to setup this tank while she's at work, and surprise her w/ it. She wants it to happen but doesn't know its going to be Friday muahahahaha. brownie points time lol

they are spotted yellow amazon puffers but the dots are really small, the puffers themselves are only an inch long, including the figure 8s

^ Maybe try and get a pic, coz by your description they sound more like Green Spotted Puffers, since as Bottles said, the only other Puffer that i could think of that might go by that name is the South American Puffer Colomesus Aseullus as well...
