Setting up a lil puffer tank for mom

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
both puffers can grow to a decent size and will likely end up fighting. my GSP was one of the most interesting fish and by far the most determined hunter. he slowly but surely hunted every tankmate and tore the fins up until they couldnt escape and he would eat them. also highly recommend adding salt until they are in full SW and they are much more healthy. i know everyone says to wait but i had mine in 1.025 after about a month and he was maybe 1.5 inches. snails and other shelled food are great. wouldnt recomend for a beginner

okay from what I've read the male dwarves will have the stripe of dots correct? any other distinguishing marks?

Males have a wrinkle over their eyes like an eyebrow. Also if you're going with f8's start them off in freshwater then raise the salinity by .002 every month until you reach a salinity of 1.008
They get 3" and don't require their beaks to be trimmed if kept on a crunchy diet. You can get little pest snails from Walmart or any lfs for free.
Also you should feed them every other day instead of every day like most other fish.

I'll most likely be going with the Indian dwarf puffers instead of the SAs, I doubt my mother would be trying to shave a fishes teeth haha. I'll get her snails from the LFS on my food runs, if from what I've read is correct the Indians can be in total freshwater for life?

Is this the same with all puffers or just the SAs? The every other day feeding thing

For feeding, i would say feeding them every other day or every third day is a good starting point...

You basically want them fed till they have a slightly round belly... If say on the 2nd day they still seem very full or not overly interested in food wait another day...

My fahaka for example gets fed a large meal every 3-4 days depending on how much interest she shows...

SA Puffers (Colomesus Asellus) are probably the only puffer that I would feed everyday because they are so active. Some of the other active species like Figure 8s, I would feed every other day, and the "lurkers" can be fed 1-3x per week.
As Homer said, keep an eye on the belly, and you'll know when to feed.
