Setting up a predator salt tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have another question. I was thinking of adding two 1400 GPH Hydor Koralia Evolutions powerheads to the tank, one at each end. They produce about 4' of current so this would be the best choice. I was wondering though are powerheads a must? I'd get these two if they are b/c they sell them for cheap at work but would this be to much OR to little flow of water? I don't want it to stire up the sand etc.... and make the tank a mess.

Well with your fx5 your already good on turn over rate. I would only use smaller power heads such as 500gph. To fix dead spots.

Or just buy one of these *****es! Thats right, 30$ shipped... 3200gph! these *****es PUSH water.

Otherwise i would just find a cheap used powerhead at a lfs. Just a small 200-500gph and strategically place it based on your rock set up. Your fx5 may be enough, so i wouldn't worry about the powerhead until your sure you need it.

***t those are some heavy duty powerheads. Maybe I'll just go without until I need it.
BWT I came across this, I emailed him as I have lots to trade, I'll even give him $800 if he will take it, that is if it's still avail. An entire 175g tank, looks sweet, I love the shape of it. You usually don't see full large salt set-ups for sale like this so I thought I'd messege him. This would look pretty sweet in my bedroom, lol!

depending on what type of fish you do end up getting depends if powerheads are a must or not. personally i think every SW should have plenty of flow so i'd vote yes they're needed, and if you still plan on a getting a big angel or any tangs then i say powerheads are indeed an absolute must

Man...that ebay deal looks crazy! In my mind money spent on powerheads is well invested. Koralias are a happy medium of price and performance, and you for sure dont want a powerhead that only uses suction cups to stay on the glass because that will last for about five days, then they will fall down, and push sand ALL OVER YOUR TANK! :WHOA::(:WHOA:

Which makes you cry yourself to sleep at night. Trust me...I have been there.

Those suction cups are better than any magnet. Trust me.

They are industrial grade

Is that possible? How could a magnet fail? I have never had a magnet fail, whereas in my experience all suction cups sooner or later die.
