You can add plants before the pond is cycled. Have you ever had duckweed before? It is a great nitrate remover, but multiplies very rapidly and will cover the whole surface of your pond in a very short period of time. Once it's it in there you may never be able to get it completely out again. If you goal is to be able to have any kind of opportunity to view the fish in this pond I would avoid duckweed like the plague. There's lots of other options that are easier to remove as they multiply. Just a thought...

What about Frog Bit, Guppy Grass and Red Root Floater? Here in Iowa we are limited on what floating plants we can have. I wanted water lettuce but it is illegal to have in Iowa :(

I want to stick with low light floating plants, since the SANSI grow light bulbs aren't very strong and are best for low maintenance floating plants

TBH mate, I've had no experience with the others mentioned here...the water lettuce & hyacinth came to mind, but seems are not options d/t illegality 🤷‍♂️

You could also pot & position some low light substrate rooted plants, like vals 🤷‍♂️

Yeah it totally sucks that those are both illegal here in Iowa. Unbelievable! :(

Tomorrow I am going to see if I can locate any water garden shops that have these floating plants. Hopefully I can get some and add them to the pond soon. I thought of ordering off eBay but I don't know. Does anybody know of a good source to get floating freshwater plants online?

Hey guys, I use sponge filters a lot and I always get the ATI Hydro Sponge V Filter. I ordered two from Amazon and they look different than usual. Did they change these?
