Hi all,
I have a 28L tank which was used for freshwater and was thinking of turning it into a salt water tank.
Is the tank to small?
Thanks

no it's not too small!
it's going to be hard to maintain, but you can do it. you can only keep a very few of very small fish in there but it can be done. what kind of tank do you want?

would clownfish be to big
no, one ocellaris clownfish would be fine. it is the only fish you want to have, though. you could get some snails/hermits as well to clean up.

as far that tank being too small..... 28Ls is about 7Gs. you could do it, but you will have no wiggle room, and if something goes wrong your fish could die very fast. you should test daily, and don't let more than 5% of the total water mass evaporate or you could have a fatal hike in salinity.

You would need a heater. I would also upgrade that undergravel filter. With that small of a tank you could get into some serious trouble if you have detrious waste building up under that plate.

I can't tell what the details are on the hood, but if you wanted any inverts you would have to rebuild that...probably with a retrofit kit. I know they do sell them because a buddy of mine has a nano reef (15G) and a pico reef (2.5G) and they are thriving.

I would just plan on doing a lot of water changes. Maybe a couple of times a week. If you set up some type of fuge that may help a little with the volume of the tank.

Best of luck. :)

I have a friend whos doing a reef in a 21/2 gallon if u filtrate the tank well enough n keep it up u can use any size tank

When setting up a saltwater tank, keep in mind you need 10 gallons for every 1 inch fish. Therefore, I would not suggest doing a saltwater aquarium in such a small tank. I don't think you'll be happy with this setup for a very long. I would say go with a 55 gallon, at least. I am now considering doing a saltwater setup and am looking at no less than 100 gallon fish tank. As a matter of fact, I am negotiating with someone to purchase a 220 gallon aquarium.

I find it best not to listen to "rules" when stocking nano tanks. as long as it doesn't get over 2 1/2" and doesn't swim too much, it will be fine.
