Setting up an Aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends on how big the aro is. Do you know how big it will be and do you have an Idea of what species you might get? Silvers may be the most common and cheapest but they can be a hassle to house being that they grow so large.

I am coming from saltwater so i will try and give the best advice i can...

i agree with starting out with a 180 is at all possible, i started with a 125 and i kicked myself in the butt with how much i limited my fish choice and even fish grow out. especially with a fish like aro's which grow fast and all grow quite large.

as for R/O, i would recommend it but i have seen a lot of people in the FW world just use heavy filtration and pH buffers here locally instead, im still going to use R/O but im not too sure how long i will use it with how long its going to take to fill a tank with an 8'x4' footprint with R/O water

i dont have any experience with keeping aro's so i wont be able to give advice there but with all of the experience of the people on here you will definitely be pointed in the right direction!

Much of what has already been said is very pertinent, but I'll add my 2 Abes.

Depth of the tank for an Arowana is the least concern, length and width are more important. Now I'm not advocating something 6 inches deep understand, but 18 inches is plenty even for a full size adult. But the tank needs to have enough length and width that the fish can turn without backing up or you risk gill roll.

So longer and wider is better than long and deep and skinny.

Good Luck with your aquisition whether it's a Black or a Silver.

While I will agree tank depth is not as important, it still should be given consideration. This is especially true if there are going to be tank mates. My 27" silvers usually cruise about 3~4" below the surface and they are about 5" tall. So I would think dedicating the top 10 to 12" of a tank to the silvers is needed. In an 18" tall tank most the middle dwelling fish would be into the aro's space. IMO I wouldn't go less then 24", myself I decide to go 30" on the new tank.

I concur fully! The point I was trying to make to the OP was that a long and thin tank isn't the way to go. If he has to sacrifice something it should be depth over width.

I am also happy to announce that for my up coming B-Day (the 14th...damn I'm getting old now) I will be getting a 220. Right now I'm just trying to decide how I'm going to set it up. Think I'll start a thread and get some input from the gang.
