Just be careful with the depth of your substrate, gas pockets could form and release when you do your routine maintenance. How many discus do you plan on buying???

if your set on fish of that size and no plants then you don't need more than an inch or less. you'll have to feed the fish 6-8 times per day, so you want to be able to clean it as easy as possible. bb would be best til they grow a little but I personally don't like bb either.I use brazillian pennyworth for floating plants. nice shaped leaves and easy to grow.
