sand is ridiculously easy to clean, you just sweep the end of the vac right over the surface and it sucks everything right up... it takes a few times to figure out where to hold the vac so that you are picking up only the waste and not the sand, but once you figure it out, it couldn't be easier.Poklei;3616054; said:dont use sand, i regret it, pain in the butt to clean, gets dirty fast as you can see all the waste on top. takes a lot of time to clean it, u gotta vaccum the sand and then put the sand back in. I still have a sand tank for about 6 months. i havent vaccuumed the floor for 5 months or done any water changes.

i think it all depends on where you live... since play sand is usually supplied by the local aggregate companies, not everyone is getting the same stuff. i got some play sand down in minneapolis once that was terrible, after rinsing out most of the powdery stuff i think i only had about half of what i had originally purchased and it still clouded up on me during every feeding time.ssg aldridge;3629386; said:i had play sand i rinsed and rinsed, i even strained it. you will never get all the fine powder out of it. it looks great but it gets stirred it up everytime they swim on the bottom. the more they stirred it up the more my filter sucked it up. if you dont mind all the extra cleaning of the filters and the cloudyness each time you feed or they get frightened, then play sand is your pick. i switched back to small aquarium gravel.
