Setting up new UV

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To be honest with you i really think that if your using a UV why not just run the thing for 24 hours a day? The bulbs will keep working for 12 months, and it seems that almost to the day you need to replace them, even though they are still lit. This way you know that every year in June you need to replace the bulb. They are expensive but there is really no harm in keeping them on all the time.
Just my two cents..

Everyone seems to be posting while I am posting.. Hot fish girl has a good point when it comes to plumbing.. this is partly why i prefer having a sump that you can do all this work with. but bypasses and the such are very good and you will be happy you have them if you ever develop a problem.

will your set-up lend itself to easy bulb changing?
Have you considered placing a 90 deg thread/barb at the left side of the UV?
This may help in making the hose lay more neatly.
Respectfully, FM.

Yes, I made sure it was easy to change the bulb. The bulb is at the right side of the UV, all I have to do is move the transformer (20+ ft cord makes it easy), unscrew it and put in the new bulb.
I was thinking more along the lines of uses half circle clamps and mounting it to the wall that way. I'm going to put it off for a while and I'll figure it out later.

also can you get to change the bulb if need be?I placed my uv right in front for easy access as well as putting shut offs on the uv.I only used a 25 and my tank is a 450 gallon but overkill is fun.

The only problem is the height of the UV. It's a bit more than 7 feet from the ground. I have a step later though.:D

ahh yes, leave it to HotFish, think about shut offs to isolate the filter in times of repair. -FM

The valve is for the shut off when I need to change filter media, repair it, whatever. Wish I had the cool black valves though.:(:grinno:

It's a little extra money to keep it on 24 hours a day. 55w bulbs are about 100$ and from what I've seen, it's a "call to order" type of thing. If it was an 18 or 20 watt bulb, I'd keep it on 24/7.
