I have used the white foam 4x8 sheets from home depot to insulate my garage tanks in the winter. I could easily heat a 30 gallon tank with a 50 watt heater all winter long and a 125 with a 150 watt heater. I have cut the foam sheets with my circular saw and a table saw and glued them with tight bond wood glue. I did have to cut back the plastic to get the foam to glue together. I also painted them with latex (house) paint so they weren't so white. I was using 1 1/2 inch thick foam sheets.
