Setting up planted discuss tank - Comments?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the replies I posted an update on another thread as I forgot I posted this one. I agree with the disagreement.

Here is what i have become convinced of.

1. I need to buy Adults.
2. I am not convinced that 5-6 are a good idea unless I want to be a slave to water changes.
3. because of (2) I need to buy a breeding pair .
4. Because the breeding pair are in a planted tank I will not be growing any fry.

My primary question on the other thread is: Is keeping 2 discus (a proven pair) doable as show pieces for life?

Thanks for the advise again.

Greg

Interesting regarding the Flourish.. I would think that a low bubble count with established CO2 in a moderately planted tank would be more stable then using Flourish... I like the idea of holding off on the CO2. It's been a very expensive undertaking so far.

However, people are talking like I don't have very much light. I have two 4 foot 56W T5 full spectrum life glow bulbs. 10 gallons of water displaced by substrate (at least).

That's almost 112 W / 65 Gals.. almost 2 W per gallon with a max of 16 inches of depth.

Not enough for moderate planted tank? The LFS thought it would be for sure.

its enough for a moderately planted tank, however plants can't make full use of co2 injection until you get around 3 wpg most of the time.
it isn't really a exact science, the necessary wpg changes in big and small tanks and different plant types(some people try to use lumens but i think its a pain in the ass).

co2 is used in photosynthesis and the first component of photosynthesis is light so it basically controls the speed of all the reactions that take place after it.

the reason i like excel for starting a tank is because most algae can't use it like co2, so it should give the plants a edge. i think co2 is better for growth but if you get your nutrient balance wrong it can feed algae very fast.

Pictures of your tank?

please? I got a similar thing going on

I will try to post pictures in the next 48 h. Plants are just establishing themselves.

I'd love to see yours as well.

Guys, my Discus (1 male, 3 female) have been together for 4 years.
They are all fully grown, with the male at 8inches, and females around 6-7inches.
The Tank has sand base, lots of wood, and lots of plants.

They have 6 cory mates.

I add liquid plant food once a fortnight, and do weekly 50% water changes.

The plants are healthy.
The Discus are healthy, and I am for ever having fry in the tank, which yes, I have grown on and sold.

My male is wild caught, and the females are f1 by the way.

They are not stunted, and are in perfect health.
I havent once had any disease.

There are so many people saying how difficult Discus are to keep, however, dont forget they live along side angel fish!!

Feed discus properly, and dont over feed, and that is the secret of success.

You dont need to be obsessed with water changers!

Good filtration, and good feeding/maintanence is all you need.

Not great pictures but here's a little look see.

Plants have been in there for a week and a half now. All supposably heat tolerant.

Looking good.
I have found cabomba to break up after a while when in warmer temperatures.
I have had best results with Amazon sword and vallis tbh..
I have 4 Swords nearly 36in tall!

There is a 'brazillian sword' in there at the back next to the filter intake tube. I had a big ocelot sword in there but returned it as it took up a third of my tank.

A couple new additions to my tank:

German Blue Rams (Male/Female)
Gecko Loaches (times 3) - supposably very rare.

A revelation:

I'm loving the tank and variety of fish in my Discuss supporting community. In fact I'm liking it so much I'm starting to think I may abandon discus all together.
