Just so you know, 1Male - 3Female is the appropriate proportion. No less. I had 1-1 in my first tank (cuz i was one of those noobs mentioned earlier) and had to take the female out whenever she wasn't ready to mate... luckily she was tough enough to survive, but would not be strong enough after releasing a batch of fry...

To each is own, I have two sets of 1:1's in my tank and they all get along fine (fine as you would expect in an overcrowded Mbuna tank) No nipped fins
if you get demasoni cichlids you need to get either 1 or 12 because anything in between will just kill each other. I breed them and have a large colony in a 75 gallon and they still kill each other off (mainly the males). So it would be best to get only 1 if you do not want to get a bunch.
....forgot to add that 6 would probably only work if you were guarenteed 1 male and 5 females but that is near impossible to do especially if your buying from a pet store. Too bad you dont live closer I have a crap load of demasoni fry!

I am going to trim the population when i find what are male and female to a 1:3. Would that be alright for the demasoni?
