setups with dark substrate

Taint I can't see your pics, dude. Maybe its just my pc here at work...

Very nice colors on both your fish Bog and HerC. I want mine to pop like that. I guess the only downside is that everything is more visible, including the poop like Taint pointed out. I change and vaccum every week right now. Will more be required with the dark gravel?

Dark substrate rocks, but like Tainted said, it DOES make stuff show up really well. Left over food, poo, you name it. Can be a lot of work. Plus you gotta have better lighting or its harder to see your fish...lol.

I use lighter colored substrate (pool filter sand) with a little darker sand mixed in, works out pretty good...;). If you go TOO dark, your fish won't show great colors, they will look....dark...lol

I thought about doing that too, peanut power. with a blacked out background. Any pics of your mixure/set up?

More visible? Not really. Fish poop is generally dark brown in colour as well... Anyway even if dark gravel does make things more visible, isn't it a good thing? Because you'll be able to get the stuff out before they sink beneath the substrate and churn out ammonia.

You would think, but then you realize just how often and how much your fish produce waste. One cannot describe the discontent faced after completing a thorough cleaning, only to find numerous pieces of waste rolling around black sand like bails of hay in an old western flick :nilly:

Can everyone else see my pictures? They show up fine for me.

I totally agree with you man. I hated having to clean my tank when i had my black estes sand in there. The sand was so fine, that when i tried to suck up the poo, it would suck up more sand. Was a chore to keep it looking clean.

BTW...I see your pictures loud and clear! The 10gal planted looks AWESOME! Love all the java moss! Inspiring it is! Any fish in there?

hmm, good point. i just don't want the tank looking nasty in between cleanings. i guess i could always try it out and see. if it doesn't work, change it up again.

has anyone changed their gravel without completely emptying the tank of water? i was wondering if this is impossible or a stupid thing to do.
