Sev taking out tetras at night?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the fish in question were a little too big to fit into the mouth. I imagine that if they were small enough to fit into the mouth of the sev, they would all be gone on the first day/night. They were probably ripped apart. lol

I also had a 2" convict that ripped apart ~1.5" harlequin rasboras at night. They gradually all disappeared.

I understand. I think most people think of sev's as being like a discus almost in terms of aggression.Or to better put it,a "community fish attitude" which is not the case.Sure some sev's can be very calm and mellow but I've seen some sev's that were evil as hell also.My wild pair of Rio Atabapo's held down an entire side of a 210 gallon tank from fish 3-5 times their size and more when the female dropped her eggs and they paired up.There is fish that could easily rip them to shreds in a "fight" but when it came time for breeding it was those 2 against the tank and they held it down and guarded the fry perfectly.
And of course I should add~ a fish who wont fit in the mouth can
(as mentioned) be torn to shreds and made to "fit",OR just left for dead for the heck of it also.

lol I completely agree!

Sevs arent overly aggressive but big fish eat small fish

Saying sevs aren't aggressive is like saying "cars aren't red". Some are, some aren't...

Get some rainbow fish...look nice, get to a decent but to large in size, and wont get eaten lol

I knew Sevs were a hit or miss on the community size, I guess I was more surprised because his mouth is on the small size. I give him a small piece of freeze dried krill and he spits it in and out 1000 times til he gets it - hence I was surprised.
Ripping them apart makes sense, I thought I would see scales though - I guess pleco and botia took care of that, lol.

I think I am going to just add 13 more pristellas and call it a day. It was going to be 10 and 10, but I guess the rummies are too "short" and long to survive.

I will stick the rummies in the cycling Shellie tank for now as I have no other tanks up.

Last question, my LFS has a bunch of pristellas and I couldn't find them for a couple weeks - should I add all 13 at once, or spread it out by 3s or 4s over a couple weeks?
I want to do it sooner than later, as he is still about 4" and only in for just over a month, maybe he will acclimate to them better than when he is even more established.

Thanks
N

EDIT -- it would actually be 17 added for 20 total. I think I will add 7-9 today once I am done catching rummies (they are fast f*ckers!!)

I really only care for the dwarfs, and I found them more challenging to maintain. I have had threadfins too, which are great, but would disappear in a NY minute.

I am waiting on rainbows, as I would like a longer tank with a few powerheads as an exclusively rainbow tank. I have seen vids of rainbows "running upstream" into the powerhead jets and it's awesome. That would be a river stream biotope :D

Lets just hope that Sev hasnt aqcuired the taste for Tetras. It would suck to have to go out and buy a bag of Tetra along with the regular food you feed your fish.
