So I am setting up a 90g tank and plan on putting some severum in it. How many do you think would be comfortable for life?

I would also like suggestions for tank mates. Would dwarf cichlids like german rams and apistos work? Any others?

Can I have live plants or would they tear them up?

Thanks for answers in advance!

I'll bump this because I might put a severum or two in my 90. I know they generally don't do well with plants in substrate.

No Plants. They eat them. You could do a pair in the 90 with dithers and other small sa/ca. They get big but are slow growers. I've had my pair for a year and the male is only 6" HtT. Sand or small gravel works. Driftwood and fake plants. I keep my pair with clown loaches and geos.

A pair would be perfect. But a bit of advice .... put them in the tank at the same time. Sevs get really territorial with other sevs, once they get settled in a tank, even after a couple of days.

No real plants. they will just get eaten.

But anubias and java fern on wood sometimes work from what I've seen in person. I would just do leaf litter and branches with sand personally, but I love a good planted tank.

Yeh I wanted to put java fern and anubris on the driftwood. Guess thats not an option anymore.

The tank is actually for my mom, can anyone suggest bright yellow centerpiece fish? Thanks a lot

Well, you could always have one of sevs be a gold. Other than that...not many bright yellow CA/SA fish. Female Sals, I suppose.

I've kep Sevs for about 15 years (some of mine are getting very long in the tooth). I've kept mine very successfully with breeding groups of kribensis and silver dollars. In my experience, they'll decimate any plants, even anubias.

I have a pair in my 90 with some dithers. I tried keeping plants but they always ended up eating them eventually
