Severum 90g tank set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A pair of grown Severum would be nice in a 90. I agree with plants not working, I tried Ludwigia, Vals, Crypts, Anubis, Water Sprite (the water sprite was a nightmare, I was netting it out). Mine stayed away from the Java Fern until it was the last man standing and then that got mangled not eated just riped up. What did look nice in the tank and I'm still using it for diggers is the plastic and fabric plants from the reptile section in Petsmart that suction cup to the glass. It looks nice with a black background along the back wall and I stuck a couple up near the top for a floating effect and to create a shaded subdued area.

If you didn't want to have a breeding pair you could try 3 males in together with a nice piece of driftwood to break up the line of sight. I have 2 turquoise
males that get along great, but it all depends on the fishes temperament. Although I think it would work if you got the all when their about an inch long. In my severum tank I anchored java moss to the driftwood and it generally grows faster than they can eat as long as you include plenty plant matter in thier diet. Other then the moss my sevs destroy or eat any plants I put in thier aquarium.

Interesting on the plant experiences everyone has had, I set my dad up a planted tank with severums figuring they'd be OK, obviously I was wrong about that one. :)
Guess we'll see...

I think how "destructive" sev can be with plants depends on the setupo as well. The smaller the tank, the more they go after plants etc.. My sevs were fine with plants in a 220 and 300 but when in the 125 gallon, the same sevs made it their goal to "kill the green thingies.."

I would do 5 to break any chase pattern that might develope and watch how they grow. I have found buying 5 or more of the same fish to be quite successful for many fish. I have 8 managuense in the same 180 since they were 1" and have not had any problems. You can check out my YouTube by typing smitty03281964 in search box or check out managuense feeding then click on smitty03281964.

My sevs tear up/eat anything that's NOT anubis or anacharis. They just like to hide under the leaves now.

As far as tankmates: I've got clown loaches, EBJD, and a gibby pleco in with my sevs. They're all happy together. Sevs are a more peaceful cichlid, IMO. They'll go great with geos. I'm not sure about putting in the rams though (they may be too small in comparison to the sevs.)

Good advice so far, I'd just add that I have a Green Severum in a 55 with a blue acara and a couple of silver dollars.
Everyone has always lived peacefully together.(over 2 years now)
I can't say anything good or bad about adding live plants as I've never tried it.

I have a pair in a 90 with 7 red head geos. I plan to add a school of precox rainbows for the upper area of the tank. It makes for a sharp tank.
