Severum advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you're going to order I recommend getting several to grow out. Pick your favorite and trade the rest in to your lfs when they get too big. You'll most like make back what you spent that way.

Seems I'm a little late, but I agree with most of what was said. Really pick what species of severum you want. Advantage of just getting one big, you know what it'll look like. Disadvantage is cost and you loss out on the fun of them growing up. Honestly corys and deep bodied tetras will be fine, especially if you start with juvie severums.

As for the AC 110, go for it! Great filters and with a bed bath and beyond coupon that regularly gets emailed out you can get one for about $65. I do always recommend running a sponge filter though so you can easily move to a sick tank at any point.
Bed Bath and Beyond sells aquaclears?

Online. It's where I got both mine =D worth noting that was like a year ago though. Haven't double checked since...

Thanks to all for the advice. A lot of great suggestions for tank mates, and a pair of AC 110s sound like a solid filtration setup.

I stopped by another LFS today where I talked to the owner for an hour or so.

The shop had a few nice looking younger and juvenile Severums including two juvenile Rotkeils. It looks like I'll be good for a local purchase on the fish. He seemed just a little skeptical on tetras but said they'd be worth a shot with a juvenile. He didn't like the corys' long term chances. His recommendation was a couple of bn plecos for bottom feeders. He also suggested maybe adding a juvenile Electric Blue Acara (he as a ton of them) to the tank instead of the tetras. Cool fish with a generally decent temperament, but they do get to 6" or so...I'm not sure how it would work out in a 75 with the Severum.

The LFS owner also confirmed what I've read about Severums and plants. I could try a few, but they'd probably end up destroying whatever I put in there. If I put Buenos Aires tetras in there with the big guy/girl, it would quickly turn into a moonscape. I'm fine with plastic plants though. Some nice rocks and driftwood, and I'll be satisfied with the tank set up.

Festivum (mesonaua) are a great compliment if you enjoy schooling fish that are a bit more personable and pretty.

Thanks. They are pretty but how many in a 75 with a (potentially) 8" Rotkeil?

I'm not sure, something about putting my cichlids into a big tank stopped my brain from thinking about putting them into smaller tanks.

Cories will be fine as well as plants...just stay away From delicate stem plants. Deeper bodies tetras are fine as well. Rotkiels aren't notorious plant eaters from my experience. You can go with EB acara' sir you want them but holding two pairs of both when grown in a 75 is pushing the bio load.

Most guys at the LFS are pretty cool. Not all of them are as knowledgeable as we would hope. I've kept rotkiels for some time now and know them pretty well.

Thanks again. I'm looking at single fish for the bigger guys and not interested in any mating turf wars. As I understand it the severums/rotkeils are good by themselves, but I'm not sure about a lot of the other cichlids. If an acara really needs a mate, forget it...I'll go with the original stocking plan.
