Severum bullying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put back the large piece of wood which helped a bit. I will see if I can move some plants around and get some more larger ones to create more hiding places.

More territories, hiding places. add more dithers to distract them.

I have a similar stock list as the fish in your tank. I have black skirts, cories, balloon rams, a green severum, and some brilliant rasboras. They all seem to be getting along in my 90 gallon tank but I also wanted to add more severums. I was thinking one red, one gold, one green, and a red shoulder. Is four severums in a 90 gallon too much? Sorry not trying to steal the thread but after hearing your story im cautious to add more. Previously stated was that you add tiger barbs as a dither fish but I suggest you dont because they will nip at the fins of your gold balloon ram.

Balloon ram. Thanks I had no idea what it was!

I tried rearranging the plants to create a bit of a line down the middle. So far it hasn't helped much. I am not sure if I should leave them together and hope it gets better or separate them now.

Thanks for the tip about the tiger barbs. I had 3 tiger botias that were biting the fins of everything in the tank so I don't want to go through that again.

My advice mirrors that of those who have already given theirs.

The first is to increase your decor and create more breaks in line of sight and increase the number of hiding spots.

Second would be to add 2-3 more severums of the a similar size. It will help spread their aggression around so no one becomes overly shy or damaged. You will have to remove most of them once they reach around the 6" size.

IME, severums create a pecking order fairly early on. Unlike many cichlids who grow up feeling comfortable in larger numbers, severums seem to like to lay it all on the line and find out who is king of the tank at a young age. Dithers will help with shyness if the aggression from fellow severums is not too high (like it seems to be in your tank), but higher levels of conspecific aggression are rarely helped by adding more dithers.

P.S. The pic is of a gold balloon ram.

Thanks for the advice. I tried adding more plants with more hiding areas, but it still wasn't working out very well.

I ended up giving the one severum to my gf sister and brother in law. They are big fish people and have a large tank for it. So it will probably be better there.
