I purchased a couple of heros severus Rio curare severums a few months ago and was wondering if anyone has any idea wat the growth rate of these guys are like ? I'm keeping them in a 170 gallon tank with other severums and uaru and have great colouration and are eating like pigs, but seem to be growing alot slower than my rotkeils and libifier severums

It’s really hard to say because a lot depends on their age/size when you got them and if their growth had been interrupted due to feeding/water change schedule.

I wouldn’t think they’d have a much different growth rate than other Heros. My F1 fish are growing on par with other species I’ve raised.

I bought them back in September they were about 2 inches back then and clearly very young fish they are now only sitting at about 3 " in the same time iv had other severums double in size

Just curious-- are they wild or F1 and what are pH and hardness in your tank? They're have a lower pH/hardness origin than some other types, so it might be the others in your tank are comfortable in conditions not as comfortable for the severus?

Based on threads I've seen, it seems some come with health issues, at least some batches from some sources. So I'm thinking that's a possibility-- or may be part of the history of yours? I seem to recall a thread where treating with metro straightened out one group.

But I haven't kept them personally, Ryan has. If similar in growth to other Heros, then based on types I've kept I'd expect something like two three inches in growth in the time you've had them. At about one year of age, I'd normally expect 5,6 inches, sometimes more.

You might experience accelerated growth in a 170, with good feeding and water quality, they would definitely thrive in a tank that size. If you get your severum at 1in you will figure out the males within a month because they will outgrow the females, I expect a Severum to reach 6-7 in length and 5-6in height by the time a year passes for a male. For a female I expect 4-5 in length. They are relatively slow growers and I believe this is due to their height. At 3 years a male severum could reach 10+in length.

They are both supposedly wild caught and my ph is about 6.4 I use a mixture of peat filtration and seachem acid buffer to achieve this with my tap water coming out at 7.4 I do 80% weekly water change and filter the tank with 2 fluval fx I'm under empression that the fish is in good health as there really plumb little buggers lol I'll upload a pic later

Don't know, then. Any Heros I've kept have all grown similarly to what I mentioned above, similar to what Tiger Talon mentioned. I have raised Heros spawns where there are some smaller, slower growing individuals. Most caught up eventually (or nearly so), just took a little longer. Maybe you happened to get some like that. Could be you'll see a growth spurt at some point.

If they're wild caught and not de-wormed, I'd definitely do it at some point. They may carry parasites and worms that interfere with growth normally, plus they can pass them on to your other fish.

They're beautiful by the way, and the tank also.
