Severum Help-Aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no still use a heater just have it so its not touching the sides, and yeah for a 5.5in, 4.5in and 2.5in getting a larger container like this will be much better than the 10g they are in now, how often are you changing the water? with all that it should be changed like every day, but with the tub just move the filter you have on the ten gallon on it so you dont have to worry about cycling and then add another filter if you have one, in that tiny of a space there is no chance of them getting along, once they have some room im sure they will calm down a lot

wow, please try and find a different home for them, one shouldn't be in a 10g tank, even a 5.5" one for a temporary isnt good. the aggression is just going to continue, some severums just turn and become aggressive.

I have 2 gold severums and 1 green in my 150 gallon tank, plenty of room equals no agression. They are all about 8". Their tank mates are 2 tinfoil barbs, 2 parrots and a pleco

Ya. Slowly get the warer temp to 76 or so will help aggression.

And agreed. Skip the 45g and step up to at least a 75g. Try Craigslist under "aquarium" and "fish tank"

One doesnt love severums if they cram 3 males in a 10gal tank. Thats sad.
You really need an upgrade asap or get rid of the fish and get ones more suitable for your sized tank.

yeah you will need much larger than a 45g, i would say a 90g min for them to have a chance of working, and yeah 85 is way to high unless your treating ich or something, bring it down to 78-79

I keep all my severums and similar SA cichlids at 82F. A temp of 85F won't hurt anything, but it does speed up their metabolism which will cause them to be more active.

Like others mentioned, a 45 gallon is still way too small for a fish that can reach an adult size of 8 - 10". I'm growing out some severums I spawned -- at 3" in size, I have six each in 55 gallon tanks and they are beating the crap out of each other. They really need large tanks once they start maturing. You could probably do three in a 75 gallon, or better yet, a 90 gallon.

Surprisingly, all males usually do fine together if given adequate space. I removed all the females from my display tanks because it kept the males from beating the crap out of each other. For me, it's the females who always fight. Males only get aggressive when fighting over a female or defending a territory while breeding. In addition to needing a larger tank, is it possible that you've mis-sexed one of them?
