As some of you know, I have a small (3 1/2" ish) green severum growing up in a 40 Breeder. This is it's permanent home at this point in time, but i'm pretty sure within the next year I will have a 75g at least.

Well for the last week and a half or so, it has been acting very shy, and not it's normal "greet you at the front of the tank" self... I think it may have something to do with me taking a few tankmates out a few weeks ago (3 bichirs). Then last week, I trimmed some plants, and I think that set him/her off... lol

I really think s/he needs another fish in the tank with her besides my reclusive BGK who will only pop out every 15-20 mins or so.

I definately know to stay on the smaller end of the scale... So I was thinking about a Firemouth or a Convict. Is there a better option?

edit: I just want to say: I know I'm ridiculous. :D

go with a blue acara or firemouth, they are near the same aggression level as your severum.

I think a fire mouth might pick on him, and I definitely think a convict would; especially as it matures.

You should add a few earth eaters or a brasilian or something along those lines.

A fire mouth might work though for a while, the problem is going to be finding one with enough size that your sev doesn't bully right off the bat.

The thing about Firemouths is, they will stand up to anything. I don't think my Severum is "hard" enough to pursue a fish like that...

I can always try it, and if it doesn't work I'll just put it in my bichir tank...

my gold and female rotkeil are very mellow. they had no beef with any other fish in the tank but would be able to push back. my male rotkeil is dominant in my 125g. he pushes around my psittacus but that will prolly change soon since the psittacus is growing fast. id consider a uaru, similar body shape and temper, or a chocolate cichlid

I'd go with a schooling fish it can't eat... tiger barbs or giant danios... something like that. Something that is always out to tell the sev its "all clear" so to speak.

I have kept mine with a firemouth, con, acara, and kribs with no problems in the past

She was in with 5 Giant Danios, before they ate bad food and dropped dead, one after the other, in a matter of 3 days.

I don't know if I want to try that again, though...

Hi... If you don't care about being biotopically correct, I think if you could find them almost full grown( 2 or more inches) and got a good size school the tiger barb idea would be interesting.. I had a school in with my salvini and they handled themselves just fine.. In a big enough school they really don't seem to bother anyone else in the tank and they provide a lot of activity and color.. I don't think the sev would be able to eat them especially at the 3-4 inch size he/she is now.. It would certainly be something different than your normal g danios etc. and if you decided you didn't want them in the bigger tank when you got it, they are easily returnable to an lfs and fairly inexpensive... Same goes for rainbows if you like them..
I also think a lot depends on if and when you are really getting another bigger tank.. As you know a lot of the other fish mentioned, such as chocolates, get really big and definitely need that bigger tank along with the sev.. Good luck whatever you decide to do.. Sue:D
