Severum Need Tankmate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I want a cichlid that will work for a long while with the Severum. "Work" meaning tempermentally, and physically. Even if it might get cramped after a year or two (which, again, I will most likely have a bigger tank by then anyway), if it works, that's what I want... A firemouth has been the one on my mind the most.

Thanks everyone so far.

Your not going to have a year or 2 in 40g tank. Most of the green or turquios severums are going to be 8+ inchs at around 12 months. I would not add another cichlid. Go with some cheap tetras.

8" isn't really that much, IMO... I could fit a couple 8" fish in there if I wanted to. Regardless of gallons, the tank's footprint is pretty good. But I definately understand what your saying.

I am exaggerating greatly with "a year or two", but I want to get the point across that I will not be upgrading in the next couple of months. :)

a 36x18 isnt a good footprint for a couple 8" cichlids. severums are active and bulky. they need atleast a 4ft tank. if you gonna have a larger tank in the next couple months, get tetras till then and then look for a chiclid or another fish based on the size of you new tank

datnoid, and stump i know how conservative you are so you prolly wont do it but seriously, buy a 3" dat and itll be happy in your tank for 3+ years

^^ Dev, you're right, I probably won't. lol
You're not the first person to suggest that, though. ;)

While I don't like hearing it, you're probably right. I don't like tetras though.

So what's the reasons against a dat?

It would one of those things I would have to go out of my way to get (as opposed to picking one up at one of the few LFS around here), and I am not entirely convinced I want one yet.

I mean, just how slow growing are they? Max sizes? I can't get a HUGE aquarium where I live. It's a very old house.

well i would say LIFE as in 20 years you would need a 180
but for a looong time it would be good in a 125
they can potentially get to 18" but you would probably get about 1" per year
