I purchased three Rotkeil severums last weekend. None of the three have touched flake food or pellets since then, and will only eat frozen food. The previous owner did not have any problems with them taking a variety of foods.

I feed Omega One Flakes and Spectrum pellets.

Any thoughts on why they are being so finicky and how to get them to eat more of a variety?

Give them another week or so and they should come around.

Here's something else to consider if you have live plants in your tank...
When I got my Rotkeil, I was worried because he never ate when I fed the other fish in the tank. Eventually I realized that he was eating the plants and was filling up on those which was why he wasn't touching the food. As soon as I removed the plants he started eating like a pig along with the other fish.

One of my Rotkeils eats market shrimp and super worms (along with his tankmates of aro, rays, tinfoil barbs). He also eats the occasional pellet. The other Rotkeil is in a planted tank and doesn't seem to eat as much. He only seems to eat bloodworms so he probably is also nibbling on plants. He used to eat shrimp in a tank with no plants.

I am sure your severum will get around to eating once he is more relaxed in the tank. Fish can go a long time without eating. My aro went on a hunger strike for a month before he broke me (he's now eating super worms which I didn't want - I wanted him to eat more shrimp).

I would recommend trying an earthworm. They cannot resist and it will help get it confident when you are in front of the tank that food is short to follow.

EDIT: LOVE you avatar. =)
