Severum tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My sevs are currently with heckellii, a jerk of an iporangensis, a bellycrawler and a melenarus.

Tried to look up melenarus and all I got was a saltwater wrasse.

I have fallen in love with my geophagus red heads, so am liking the idea of having an earth eater, but I don't think I would have room for a group of them if I want four diverse looking fish in the 8-12" range. That being said, is there a species of earth eater that can be kept alone?

First is my paraneetroplus melanurus, second is my geophagus iporangensis who does just fine on his own.

My stocking with 2x Severum:

-Cichlids-
1X Albino Tiger Oscar
1X Lutino Tiger Oscar
1X Rotkeil Severum
1X Turquoise Severum
1X Marbled Angel
2X Blue Acara
1X Firemouth
1X Nicaraguan
1X True Parrot (hoplarchus psittacus)
1X Jack Dempsey
1X Texas
5X Red Hump Geos

-Dithers-
6X Spotted Silver Dollars
2X Longfin Blushing Tetras

-Oddballs-
Senegal Bichir
Black Ghost Knife

-Clean up-
Common Pleco
Flagtail Prochilodus

Honestly I think that severum are underrated when it comes to their aggressiveness, while they do not appear to be confrontational, mine have never been bullied. (Except when my female beat the crap out of my male)

Keeping a flagtail with them shouldn't be a problem either, mine has shown no interest the entire time I've had him when it comes to sucking slime coats. Although you may have to upgrade that 125 at one point if you do get one; they get freaking huge!

You have me wanting a blue acara. :) I definitely think I have to hunt down a pure blue acara and not one of those hybrids.

A nicely colored acara and a chocolate would be a good fit, or a bellycrawler pike ... they don't get too large or too aggressive.

I love the color and shape of the blue acara and I think I will definitely have to get one. I just have to be careful to gt an actual blue acara and not a GT hybrid like my last one. :( Chocolates just don't do anything for me. And after looking into the belly crawler pike, I would definitely love to have one. Is there only one species of belly crawler?

I'd go with a greener acara like a green acara, A. patricki, or A. sp. Jenaro Herrera or a gold one like A. diadema ... while I love blue acaras, you will already have the blue jack in there.

Bellycrawler is actually it's 'name' atm, it's an undescribed species. There are other pikes that act similiar, but they are rare.

Half the things you listed I couldn't find pictures of. The patricki and diadema are a bit bland for me. I do like the Jenaro Herrera though. Not sure whee to find any, but I will have to do some looking around. I think it would be a cool idea to have a few acaras in the tank. All the acaras I looked at seem to be around 6" fish, which is a little lower than I was expecting, but no big deal.

Do you think I could stock the 125 with the severum, the EBJD, two acaras, and the bellycrawler?
