Severum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have (2) about 6 inches each-mix well with other tankmates. Good eaters, I started them on frozen bloods, now I have them working on shrimp and massivore.

They're pretty easy to keep and if taken care of, they show off their colors nicely.
They'll eat just about anything, in fact, it was a pain trying to feed my other fish because the Severums would always swoop in and steal the food.

Also, I would get a few, they seem to do better in groups.

They are totally peaceful, slow moving and beautiful..the only time they are aggressive is when maturing and they lip lock frequently until they out grow it or pair off..at least mine did... they are big and need plenty of room but get along well with even clown knife... and do not seem to bother even smaller fish like angels.. very sweet severums..you will enjoy them... what kind are you planning on getting..?

yep they are nice fish but can be aggressive as they grow. my old gold severum was absolutely psychotic and beat up a Loisellei, blue acara, male convict and tried to take on my GT but failed. he was about 2-3" at the time and my GT was 5" ish. oh and killed an oscar twice its size and nearly killed a firemouth twice its size.
but i do believe mine was the exception rather than the rule.

wow what a severum... what happened to him....

I just purchased my first, a 9" male, hes blue? However hes getting picked on by my 12" bocourti and 7" fen., hope things cool down soon!?

because i couldnt add any other cichlids and i had the P. Loisellei, GT, male con to think about i figured i would cut my losses and get him a hobbiest that can devote a single tank to him or breed him and use his aggression for something useful.
i also think the GT would have eventually killed him because he was constantly trying to pick fights with the GT and i saw my GT kill a syno cat just because it bit his fin, cos he was in its cave, so i gave the gold idiot a shot at life before he got himself killed. more braun than brains lol.
my GT only had a fight if he had to as well, a big softy generally. but he could look after himself.
lol all my fish have been messed up and the opposite. a GT that was very calm and took 2 baby uaru(snack size) under his wing and protected them, a con that was not aggro at all, a Parachromis that was a wuss, a rainbow cichlid that was psychotic, a psycho blue acara that beat my GT, an O that didnt use its size advantage and a FM that didnt even talk a good fight like they are supposed to and a psycho sev. cichlids are indeed strange fish.

i agree with you that cichlids are a strange fish and have many different types of personalities even among the same species.. my gt have always been so sweet not there name of terror at all... you have learned quite alot from keeping all yours... makes it interesting for sure.

Severums are great. I've had about 10 and numerous groups of fry that I've sold to LFSs. The water parameters are always stated as low ph(5.5-7) and very soft water. However, I have found that severums do well in just about any type of water due to their prevalence in the hobby. One thing people sometimes overlook with severums is their need for vegetable matter in the diet. Yes, they love meaty foods, but don't overlook the flakes. They are very trusting and hardy if given time to acclimate. Most people say they are shy but I've never had one to remain that way long.

About aggression. They are just like any cichlid, it depends on the individual. Mine have lived just fine with Oscars and JDs. They do tend to get along more than fight. You should google severum and green severum. There is a lot of info on these guys. Also take a look at the video section on them from google, lots of stuff.
