Yeah, the water parameters are fine, i.e. no ammonia, no nitrite, low nitrate. However, it is LA tapwater so the ph is pretty high. Could that be the problem?

What is the ph of your water? Also...Do you use water conditioner?

Maybe you should look into african cichlids then?

my redspot severum used to suck at the top like that. Kinda looked like he was trying to breath and there was more oxygen at the top..... so i changed the water and immediately he was fine. Heating the tank actually burns up oxygen in the tank faster so you may also check to see if you're heater is too robust for the tank size.

Mine did this, died the next morning :( no idea what was up with him, was a nice big 8" green male :( so some clues would help me to :D

I DO use water conditioner. The tapwater ph is around 7.8 in LA, but I have driftwood in the tank. I was told that most fish can adapt to the higher ph as long as it is stable, i.e. chemicals lowering ph were a waste of time and actually dangerous.

I'm glad to here that the tables are going to turn in regards to the dominant fish. Do severums grow slowly or quickly?

İ thınk he mıght be fıghtıng wıth somethıng ın there, my baby sev ıs around 4'' and so ıs my raınbow they constantly annoy eachover and the sev bars up and sometımes go vertıcaly, ı thınk ıts to make hım look domınant over the raınbow, but ıf hes doıng ıt all the tıme ıt very could well be lack of oxygen ın the water thıs happens to my tanks ın the summer and all the fısh do ıt. ı fıll a bottle wıth ıce and float ıt ın there normaly works or just do a waterchange =)

If it's still very small and does it mainly after eating it's probably looking for more food. A ph of 7.8 is fine for tank bred severums. Many young fish a naturally bug eaters. Maybe he is just instinctively looking up for bugs on the surface. Chocolate cichlids do this constantly until they are pretty large.

mine does this after eating all the time...hes a fatty and just loves food more than anyone so he will spend tons of time watching the surface for floating bits...longgg after the food is gone btw. If his fins look good and he looks good i bet its just this
