I am considering a turquoise severum, upon doing research I found that a lot of websites are saying that you can keep a single severum in a 30gallon tank. This seems absolutely absurd to me. Does anybody think that this reasonable set up for this fish? The Internet baffles me there is so mush contradicting information out there it’s hard to know what to believe and what to dismiss.

Anyways I am looking for some advise, I may be getting another 55 gallon on the cheap side. I know for a fact that I can keep a single severum in a 55 comfortably, but can you keep a pair in tank that size?

A fully grown pair would make a 55g look small. The extra 6" width of a 75g makes a big difference IMO. I've used 55g temporarily for breeding purpose but I keep them in a bigger tank otherwise.

I agree. well said as always.

Maybe I will start out with the 55 and then upgrade to a 75 later.

I recently started a fish room that is 16' x 8' and right now all I have in there is a 10gal & a 29 gal. I plan on slowly putting a 55, 75, and 300 in there.

I have 3 other tanks spread around my house but really like where they are currently located won't be moving them into my fish room. Plus it will be more fun to get and set up new tanks.

That sounds like a great plan good luck and enjoy the severum. watch out they are addictive. IMO they are just about the perfect fish. I would be happy with a tank full of severums and no other fish. I just love them.

thats what i did. my pair grew fairly slow because they started breeding at a small size. they lived in my 55g for about 2 years. right before i moved them to my 125g i had to take out all the decor and leave them with two small pieces of wood to spawn on. the male just got huge, 9-10" and bulky, while the female stayed relatively smaller, 7-6". i'd say after a year start looking at a 75g+ for them.

yeah i think a 55g would be OK for a pair but a 75g would def be better, though i think as long as you keep up with water changes and keep decoration to a minimum they could do ok in a 55g, but as everyone on here knows when it comes to tanks bigger is always better lol

If it's a mated pair life is going to be unplesent for sombody, possably you. Instead of getting a 55 kick in some extra cash and go stright for the 75 right off the bat, why buy twice. If you can't afford the 75 then I advise waiting until you can and do it that way. Don't be in a hurry Severums will still be around in a year.
