I posted earlier about making an EBJD the centerpiece of a 55 gallon tank. I have now decided to go with a red severum since seeing one today at the LFS. The 55 gallon tank currently has the following:

2 small ballon rams
10 Buenos Aires tetras

I would like to add a red severum as the centerpiece fish and another school of 8-10 tetras to fill out the tank.

Would this stock work in a 55 gallon tank? Also, which tetras would you recommend that are both colorful and could co-exist long term with the severum? The tank has a black background with black substrate so I'd like a type of tetra whose colors would really pop.

^ that should be fine...

Scratch that...now I have 6 rasboras lol. That didnt work out as I had hoped. 90 tall pair of sevrums and 7 red head geos...something ate 6 of those over night (no bodies found). I should have gone with the head and tail light tetras I was looking at.

Sevs! They work with my dempseys quite well. I'd be a little worried about the rams in there with either the dempsey or sev. Good luck though! :D All great choices...

i originally had 20 rummynoses in with my pair of sevs, they did fine together untill i went on vacation and the tank wasn't fed for a week, when i got home there were only six left, however, those six are still doing fine several months later provided the sevs are kept well fed
i would not trust rummynoses with buenos aires though, perhaps diamond or red eye tetras?

I have some Columbian Tetras with my full size Severum with no problems. In fact I want another ten or so...

Hey my First post here :P

I have tried the following dithers with Heros species in the past:

Tiger Barbs, didnt work out, they were all eventually killed by a 6-7" Gold Severum.

Colombian Tetras, these worked but lost them to white spot over a weekend

Black Widows, these guys worked

Rummynose, i tried 10 with a 6-7" Red Spotted Sev and all were eaten

Silver Dollars, worked no problems

Red Line Torpedo Barbs, currently doing, works well, no problems

Odessa Barbs, worked for a few months, were picked off eventually.
