Severums

Can I keep a pair of adult severums in a 65G tank (36x18x24)? If so, will it work if I add another cichlid to the mix, I am thinking either a jurupari or related eartheater, festivum, or an acara of some sort?

no geophagus need to be in a group and they would kill the Geo...

We are talking about Sevs, not a parachromis.... They will work it up fine. Festivums and geops are good tank mates with sevs. my advice is the red head geop.

so all cichlids will defend their fry...

a small group of smaller geos will work but only if the tank os over filtered. Iporangensis are fiesty little guys, tapajos aren't as aggressive but definitely aren't afraid to stand up for themselves.

Thanks to all who replied so far. Keep the answers coming. I know that my proposed combination will work - I've successfuly kept these species before but in a much larger tank. By the way, most eartheaters will do perfectly fine without a colony. My biggest concern is the tank size. While it is 18" wide, its only 36" long as opposed to a 55 or 75G that is 48" long. With severums being on a larger side, will they be comfortable in a 3 foot long tank?

I will be running 2 AC110s and a Fluval 405, so I think I'll have plenty filtration to keep just about anything

If you're working with a pair of adult sevs, I would not add another type of cichlid. Get them a handful of dithers (large tetras) and that will be enough. IMO you don't have room for other cichlids, especially the ones you suggested in your first post. Most of those fish are large-growing and the tank would just be cramped. Once the severums spawn, they'll all be cowering in the corners anyway. My pair of Atabapo severums currently have claimed half of my 210 gallon tank and they aren't letting much larger fish out of the corner, so they will easily dominate a 65.

Personally I wouldn't put the sevs in a 36" tank as I like to give them a bit more swimming room.

x2. If your really set on an earther eater species have you looked into some of the other species not just in the Geophagus genus? For example: Gymnogeophagus and Guianacara.
