how many kinds of severums are there? i did some research and didn't come up w/ a very clear answer. a few places i read that they are all just color variations and not seperate species. can someone clarify this? if so please give descriptions or pics to help out.

p.s. i have a gold severum and two others. i bought one as a green severum and the other as a turquoise severum. if needed i could get some pics.

thanks,

they are different from what i found while researching.

does anyone else have any input?

There's a "redbelly" sev, but I think it might be used to describe the severus??? I've got 5 juvies from Rapps, let ya know in a few months . . . and I've seen a variation of the gold that has alot of red/orange all over. .

I only knew about two species of Sevs the rest i thought where just varations? Here's what I googled if we have a resident expert on MFK I would love to see pics identifiying the differences or a link:popcorn:

Heros Efasciatus:
Efasciatus is a substrate spawner and severus is a mouthbrooder. Efasciatus is the fish that most American hobbyists mistakenly call "Severum". They also come in different color varations.

Heros Severus:Severums are available in 3 color forms, which are green gold and “turquoise”. The general color in the wild form is usually a brownish green with somewhat of a brown to orange color. The Ventral fin is copper in color. 8 to 9 vertical stripes (bands, which is why they are commonly referred to as banded cichlid) run the length of the fish.

that's how my gold is.

Ive seen this red severum in my LFS and its the most colorful severum ive seen,,also a bit pricy

I purchased that severum under the name green severum. The guy at my Lfs told me the gold with the red spots are refered to as the turqs. Its funny I so many sevs and I should know more about them.
