So long story short I have 3 Red Head or Shoulder Severums. One is always getting cased in my tank by the other two. So I'm thinking I could have a pair? Below are pictures of the two that do the chasing ... mind you the don't chase each other. I tried to get a photo of the one being chased but he or she wouldn't stay still.

Hope these two photos help answer my question.

I think the males have the markings on the gill mouth area and the females don't. I have a juvie that I was trying to sex as well and lack of markings so I think it's female. Can't tell too well from your pics but does the top one have the markings and bottom one doesn't ?

Thanks I'll try and get a better shots

I think you got the opposite problem as me... I bought 4 hoping to get a pair and I think I got 4 males lol. The pics are not very focused but typically males will have a lot of marbling on thier gills. Here's a close up of my dominant male (my profile pic). If you were close I'd love to trade you for one!

I need to get better shots then because I'm sure I have one that facial looks like yours.

Here's my little rotkeil which I assume is female bc the lack of markings just as an example

If one has facial markings and one doesn't they could definitely be a pair. The dark color is something that you typically see in pairs. Good luck!

All i know is these are my favorite type of Rotkeils whatever region they are from. I think shows female first, then the male has facial patterns and a tiny hump.

It's confusing with rotkeils bc even the male on that video doesn't show the facial markings makes me wonder if mine is even a female lol

Alex i was hoping the Rotkeils i got as babies would be something like this. Not even close haha. I have no clue what region these are from.
