I was thinking male for the bottom but even at that size my male had heavy spotting.

Yea, but youre male is alone or with mate...that one in the OPs pic looks like its had its ass kicked 7 ways from Sunday.:nilly:

ok, then all but the bottom 2 are female and out of the bottom 2, the last is the best bet for a male. Almost 100% sure.

The other one might be, but I notice a lack of spotting in its body that the bottom one has.

Funny, I notice more and more spawns of dovii have way less males than females. This is another good example.

I also have noticed the largest growing and meanest fry is usually never a male in dovii spawn, at least from my previous spawns, spawns at my old LFS and others on here. I was told what determines that is either the pH or temp (cant remember which it was) when they are hatched...dont know if theres any truth to that...

I find this very interesting. The one on the bottom is the smallest fish of all seven. The other six are all around the same size....

They are beat due to lake of no one wanting to buy them and space is limited. They were all together in a 51"x20"x18"tall tank. Now they are all seperated.

LOL.

You have a very valid point there, I didnt even think about that because he is not the dominate one he spotting/coloring is diffrent.

I agree on the sexes. As far as the female to males in the spawns... that's interesting my ph is 7 and temp is 82-83 in all my tanks and I seem to notice more males in dovii spawns. I'm definitely.interested in seeing if there's any truth to that:)

its too early let him get another 2 inches and look for the spotting through out the body . the male dont color up till 6" to 7 " inches if its a young fish. cant go by color of face because females will get that too. good luck.

Ill have to pretty much disagree with this.

MD_Festae says his (pic posted above) was around that size and its easy to tell thats a male.

The pics below are of males and females and all of them are less than 3.5 inches. They are Costa Rican, except the split tail male..its a Nic.

The sex of all of them are easily identifiable at that small.

Oh, and Jason...Im waiting to hear back from a professor that told me what determines the sex on these (or his theory/experience) at birth, but I think it is the temp. My ph is 7 as well but all my spawns were in about 78 degrees and the LFS that hatched them, as well as the University lab that did, were around 76-77.

Ok thanks bud, and from what you said im thinking it might be temp too. i know their not reptiles but temps determine the sex of alligators. If this theory is true then im gonna have fun spawning certain species;)
