Sexing is quite easy and very accurate - look at the dorsal fin, if the front half is solid colored black you've got a female. If it is red with blue speckles, you've got a male. Venting is still the only 100% accurate method, but this way gives good results. You should be able to use this way with any festae over 2-2.5".

Even at a small size ~2" my male rarely showed the horizontal stripe and had more blue speckles than my female. My female at this size ~2" almost always showed the horizontal stripe. The female started to show the dorsal blotch ~2.5" and began to lose some blue speckling. Great fish just not very community friendly.

Well, as I told rallysman the other day, I believe it to be a female. Just looking at the fins and vivid colors, it appears to be a female. I also think its is pretty, so she must me a girl, cuz I'm not going to think a guy is pretty....

yeah I agree...definitely looks like a female. the front half of the dorsal and pelvic fins appear bluish and that's a trademark of a female. they'll either be blue or black depending on her mood. as she gets bigger her colors will only improve. she should turn into quite a beauty for you.
