Hi, im new. This is my Jack Dempsey cichlid. He/She is now about 13 cm long, same as my male convict. I have her/him since 9 Months. When i got her she was about 8cm long.

am i right that she is female? Will she grow some more or stay that size? She only wants to eat cichlid pellets and try shrimps and bloodworms. She ignores flakes.

This is an interesting one, the spots on the gills say male to me, but he/she looks stressed, with the dorsal fin a bit chewed, making it hard to tell if the fin is more pointed (male).

Colour on the body isn't giving it away either.

I'd say male tbh...but this one has me stumped.

I am going off cranial profile. It is hard to be certain though.

I think male, based on the lack of iridescent spots on the chin and lower cheek. Convict, I have noticed that there has been an increase of females with very pointed dorsals, so I don't think of it as a very reliable way of sexing anymore. Mine won't touch flakes anymore. Try to give NLS pellets. I also keep a bunch of ghost shrimp in a different tank and every two weeks I move fifteen or twenty into a 10gal over night where they are stuffed full of flakes so when they are fed to my jds they also get their vegetables. Also I feed frozen/thawed fish and market shrimp, crickets, grasshoppers, and worms.

Sometimes her skinn gets very dark, almost black. I will try to get a pic of her when she is more relaxed. . My male convict is boss but he doesnt chase her , so i dunno why she should be stressed

Tough one, not super clean cut. I'm by no means an expert but my vote is on a feminine looking male. The way I tell is males have more "body plating" with the iridesense where as females have more of a "blue beard".

But if its a male, why isnt he bigger? He eats more than the convict. And she is very friendly to all The other fish. I wanted to buy a male for her to breed, but now im confused
