Sex my Jack dempsey pls

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going male, I would expect more bearding for a female but is not always the case, here is my old breading pair, she has no beard showing. click the img to play.

I think male, based on the lack of iridescent spots on the chin and lower cheek. Convict, I have noticed that there has been an increase of females with very pointed dorsals, so I don't think of it as a very reliable way of sexing anymore. Mine won't touch flakes anymore. Try to give NLS pellets. I also keep a bunch of ghost shrimp in a different tank and every two weeks I move fifteen or twenty into a 10gal over night where they are stuffed full of flakes so when they are fed to my jds they also get their vegetables. Also I feed frozen/thawed fish and market shrimp, crickets, grasshoppers, and worms.

I agree, I would guess male also.

nope. let em grow, as it matures fully you will know.

JD slow growers,

It looks male to me. Females usually have more blue in the chin area. (I've been fooled before).

You mention that it sometimes gets really dark, which is more of a female thing (although, I've seen males do it too).

My first impression was that it is a male.

Here are some examples: in this first pic, the top center is a female --- see that blue under the chin?

This one, below, is a male --- note the lack of blue at the chin?
