You will have to wait till it is about 5 inches maybe 6. My male is 6 inches and my female is 5 inches and she just had her second egg laying last Monday and the babies are laying under her and doing great. When they get bigger it will be easier to tell from the colors and fins will be more pointed for males and round for females.

Nice pair of Jags. Can I ask what size tank they live in together? Is it a 5 or 6ft or even larger? I am growing out a bunch of various American Cichlids species in a 5 ft, double standard height at the moment my jag is one of the fish in the tank. Raising them all together so far no serious aggression but as they get bigger I will need to rehome some (based on aggression) and purchase a second large canister filter.
Best I could get at the time. Space is also a restriction for me as I am renting at the moment. The tank works out to be about 158 gallons or 600 litres. I just purchase a second canister for it. I currently have a Nautilus 2700 but will soon have a Fluval FX6 also. Most of my fish are 2-3 inches or less currently just a growout tank until I workout which Cichlids I like, can keep and maintain long term as I want to raise and keep couple a of monsters.
