Sex my Jags!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow, they are beautiful! Just straight Jags? Hope mine turn out like that. I see what you're saying about the big black blotches. Any info on the "tube" I was referring to?

Well if you saw a tube drop then it's a female. Males will drop there sex goods to....a femlae will be more of a tube and oval. A males will be more pointed and not drop as far.

How big were your jags before they started spawning? And do they need to be "paired" or can any male fertilize the eggs as with many other fish? I will try to get some better pics when my wife gets home with our good camera.

So I'm pretty sure this is a male (please add input!). He has uniform spotting, especially below his lateral line. Each day the spots become more uniform. I would put him around 4" long and I believe the tube I was referring to also points to male. Now the problem is that I think the other is a male as well, and that's why he's hiding and stressed. He smaller, around 3" and I cannot get a good pic of him when he's not showing super dark coloration. I would really like to find a female for this guy, but lfs really don't carry this cichlid too often, and when they do they are 1" long! Should I being growing 5-6 out to see if I can find a female? Will he accept her/she accept him if they are drastically different in size? Really interested to see if anyone's opinion has changed on the sex of this guy with better pics...

That looks male to me with the beter pic. If you want a female and have room to grow 4 or so out you should get a female. Or just keep an eye out for a larger female. He is not to big so you could grow a female out to pair up with him. Good luck

So here's an update on the Jags - See if you all agree on my final sexing.

Above is the male, which I was pretty sure of his sex from the get go. Below is the new female I picked up yesterday. The lfs had a bunch, and this one stuck out and screamed female to me. Do you all agree?

If the new one is a female I hope to see eggs soon! The male is constantly after her and has beat her fins up a bit, but it doesn't seem to be outright aggression. As always I'm anxious to hear some input.
